Mercedes-Benz announces two new V-8 engines

Mercedes-Benz recently unveiled two hot new V-8 engines that will be made available for the new CL-class going on sale next month, and promise more power, improved emissions and better fuel efficiency.

The 2011 CL550 kicks things off at $114,025, with the 2011 CL63 AMG at $151,125 and the 2011 S63 AMG sedan asking $138,875 (gas-guzzler tax and destination fee not included).

Of the two engines, the one FleetRates.com is looking forward to the most is the new twin turbo 4.6-liter V-8 as it replaces the successful 5.5 liter V-8 that powers most 550-class designations. And have no fear, whatever deplacement is lost by the engine is offset by the power boost of the twin turbocharges and high 10.5-to-1 compression ratio.

The 2011 CL500 cranks out 429 HP, a marked improvement of 12%, and over 32% better torque than the retiring 5.5-liter V8 found in the 2010 CL550. This engine will most likely find a new home in the E-Class and S-Class as well.

The second new powerhouse is AMG's new twin turbo 5.5-liter V-8, which is swapping places with the regularly aspirated AMG 6.3-liter V-8 in the 2011 CL-class, future S-Class AMG and likely all other AMG vehicles within a year's time. The new engine features start-stop technology and direct injection. While the system requires the use of a starter motor, Mercedes says future systems may not need a starter motor at all.

The 5.5-liter will produce 536 horsepower, which is 3% more power and 12% more torque than the outgoing 6.3-liter.
